Nous travaillons un peu (sismologie et blog) et partons vers 11 h pour monter le chemin qui … monte derrière le village. Avant la route et le tunnel c’était le seul moyen d’aller de Jardim do Mar à Paúl do Mar. C’est incroyable le travail qu’a représenté la construction de ce chemin qui consiste principalement d’escaliers faits de grosses pierres. Nous montons, montons … Une dame un peu devant nous renonce au premier passage difficile, le chemin est un peu éboulé mais on arrive à passer en s’agrippant aux plantes qui ressemblent à des bambous. Le bord du chemin est souvent bordé d’un câble où on peut se tenir. On monte, on monte puis arrêt eau et fruits secs, on repart et on arrive en haut à 580 m d’altitude. Ouf ! On a mis presque 2 heures. Jens monte jusqu'à la route et à l'entrée de "notre" chemin il y a une pancarte: "Trail closed"! Mais il n'y avait rien marqué en bas. Fruits secs et eau de nouveau et nous commençons la descente. Si on voulait aller jusqu’à Paúl do Mar c’est encore 1,7 km par la route, c’est trop pour nous. Nous mettons 1 h 10 pour descendre. Nous sommes fatigués, mais un court plouf dans la piscine nous rafraichit bien et le déjeuner tardif (il est 15 h) est bien apprécié. Repos bien mérité, petite promenade pour aller voir les vagues. Quand nous rentrons nous discutons avec le père du propriétaire. Il parle bien anglais parce qu’il a passé une partie de son enfance en Afrique du Sud. Il nous raconte qu’autrefois les gens qui voulaient aller à Paúl do Mar passaient par la « plage », en fait une côte rocailleuse mais que maintenant c’est interdit, c’est trop dangereux avec les éboulements et les vagues. Puis diner au restaurant, pas Joe’s, un autre. Les autres clients sont français et une grande tablée est du Québec.

We work a little (seismology and blog) and leave at around 11 a.m. to go up the path which… goes up behind the village. Before the road and the tunnel it was the only way to go from Jardim do Mar to Paúl do Mar. It is incredible the work that went into building this path which mainly consists of stairs made of large stones. We go up, up... A lady a little in front of us gives up on the first difficult passage, the path is a little loose but we manage to get through by holding on to plants that look like bamboo. The edge of the path is often lined with a cable that we can hold. We go up, we go up then stop for water and dried fruit, we leave and we arrive at the top at an altitude of 580 m. Phew! It took us almost 2 hours. Jens walks to the road and, at the start of "our" trail tere is a sign: "Trail closed"! But there was no sign down where we started. Dried fruit and water again and we begin the descent. If we wanted to go to Paúl do Mar it’s another 1.7 km by road, it’s too much for us. It takes us 1 hour 10 minutes to get down. We are tired, but a short splash in the pool refreshes us well and the late lunch (it is 3 p.m.) is much appreciated. Well-deserved rest, short walk to see the waves. When we return we talk with the owner's father. He speaks English well because he spent part of his childhood in South Africa. He tells us that in the past people who wanted to go to Paúl do Mar went along the “beach”, in fact a rocky coast but that now it is forbidden, it is too dangerous with the landslides and the waves. Then dinner at the restaurant, not Joe’s, another one. The other customers are French and a group is from Quebec.
